Family benefits and credits: where to start
Find the right programme, income year and application route for your household.
The key idea
Check eligibility, apply through the official route and plan from confirmed payment information. A benefit estimate is not an approval, and the amount another family receives is not a reliable guide to yours.
Benefits, credits and the names you may hear
A benefit can be a payment; a tax credit changes tax under its rules. Refundable and non-refundable credits work differently, and names alone can mislead. Read the specific programme rather than assuming every credit becomes cash.
The Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit (CGEB) replaced the GST/HST credit in July 2026. It provides tax-free quarterly support for eligible people with low or modest incomes. Its official page links eligibility, calculation, application and payment dates. Old GST/HST wording in records may refer to an earlier period. CRA: Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit
CCB depends on more than having a child
The Canada child benefit (CCB) requires a child under 18 living with you, primary care responsibility, Canadian tax residency and qualifying status for you or your spouse/partner. Status categories include citizens, permanent residents, protected persons and certain others. Temporary residents generally need the previous 18 months in Canada and a qualifying valid permit in month 19, alongside the other conditions. CRA: who can apply for CCB
Care and custody matter. For CRA shared custody, each eligible parent receives half of their own calculated full-custody amount, based on their own household income. It is not necessarily half of one common payment. For July 2026–June 2027, CCB uses 2025 adjusted family net income, plus other relevant details. CRA: CCB payment calculation
Apply, then keep information current
CRA’s newcomer instructions allow eligible new residents to apply for certain benefits before their first return. This does not waive residency, status, income or programme conditions. Follow the instructions for your household, including requested earlier world-income information. CRA: newcomers to Canada
For ongoing CCB, both spouses/partners file their own annual returns even if one had no income. Report relevant relationship, custody, address and residency changes through official channels. Provincial or territorial programmes may have their own applications; CRA does not administer every programme. CRA: Canada Child Benefit guide
See it in practice
An estimate is not money received
Fictional household planning only: a family has $2,700 of confirmed monthly take-home income and $2,900 of essential expenses. An application is pending, with an unconfirmed $250 estimate. Before approval, the known gap is $200. If $250 is later confirmed and actually arrives in that month, income becomes $2,950 and the balance becomes $50. This does not estimate any Canadian benefit.
A quarterly payment is not a monthly deposit. Map actual payment dates, set aside amounts deliberately and revisit the plan if a reassessment changes them.
Check your understanding
Should two households with shared custody expect the same CCB payment?
Not necessarily. Each household’s adjusted family net income and circumstances affect its calculation; CRA applies its shared-custody rules.
A useful next step
Open the official CCB calculation page or CGEB page below, choose the correct period, and follow its estimator/application links. Keep an application-status note and a date to check it. FinForFam does not calculate or approve these benefits.
